Ease first-day jitters with a simple, hands-on tradition that turns anxiety into anticipation.
Back-to-school anxiety is completely normal.
Kids are transitioning from a season of free time, family trips, late bedtimes, and spontaneous fun to early mornings, new routines, unfamiliar classmates, and the pressure of expectations. It’s a lot. They’re giving up the comfort of what they know for something that often feels uncertain—and for some kids, even scary.
As grown-ups, we might forget how big those changes feel. That’s why it helps to give children tools that ground them, provide structure, and offer joy during that transition. One of the simplest (and most magical) tools I’ve ever used is a paper chain countdown—a hands-on, visual tradition that became a core part of our classroom community.

How It Started: A Classroom Tradition Was Born
What began as a fun first-day activity quickly became something so much more.
On day one, we’d sit together and build our chain—180 colorful links, one for each school day. We didn’t just tape them together; we turned it into a celebration. We’d write notes, draw designs, and hide little messages inside. When it was ready, we would ceremoniously hang it around the room, usually stretched across our whiteboard or windows, and decorate it with twinkle lights to make it feel extra magical.
It changed the way the room felt—like it belonged to all of us. Visitors would walk in and immediately notice the chain. “What’s that for?” they’d ask, and we’d all chime in proudly to explain. It wasn’t just a decoration; it was a symbol of our shared journey.
Every afternoon, we gathered together to pull off one link. Some days brought cheers because a surprise was inside. Other days, it was just the quiet satisfaction of being one step closer to something we were working toward together. And by the end of the year, we were sad to finally take down the last link.
Great for Home or School
Whether you're a teacher looking to build classroom culture or a parent wanting to support your child emotionally, this countdown chain fits perfectly into daily routines. It’s an excellent way to help kids:
Visualize time in a concrete, manageable way
Feel a sense of progress
Build anticipation in a fun and low-pressure way
Create connection through shared moments
All you need is some scrap paper and imagination!
🛠️ What You’ll Need

Scrap paper or construction paper
Scissors
Tape, glue, or stapler
Markers, pens, crayons
(Optional) Stickers or stamps for decorating
✂️ Step-by-Step: How to Make Your Countdown Chain
Cut 180 strips of paper—one for each school day.
Link them together to form a long paper chain.
Hang it up somewhere visible—across a wall, doorway, chalkboard, or window.
Each day, tear off one link together to mark the passing time.
That’s it! Just four easy steps to start a powerful daily routine that helps kids see progress and feel more in control.
🌈 Make It Magical
Add hidden messages inside some links:
“You are braver than you think.”
“Today’s a great day to try something new!”
Include special rewards or surprises:
“Pajama Day tomorrow!”
“Class picks the read-aloud book.”
“Ice cream after dinner!”
Mark important days like:
🎉 First Day of School
💯 100th Day
🎓 Last 10 Days
Use a rainbow of colors or decorate each month’s links differently.
Invite friends or family to write encouraging notes for random links.
Celebrate chain milestones with mini cheers or classroom shoutouts!
💬 We'd Love to See Yours!
If your family or class makes a paper chain, snap a photo and send it our way! We’d love to feature it in our weekly Key Communicator newsletter to inspire others to try it, too.
Let’s start the school year strong—one link at a time. 💫
Yours In Education,
Lyndsay
